Workers Compensation – Indiana

The Workers’ Compensation Board of Indiana website does not give very much useful information for someone who has been injured at work. For that reason, you should get as much direction from your employer as possible.

Online information from the State of Indiana is located here and there is also a handbook you can read located here but it is dated 2007.

Your First Steps

The first thing you should do before anything else is to report your injury to your boss. By notifying the company, you are starting a process of claiming workers comp. which they should put in motion. It is the law that all companies have insurance and they have to fill out a form and send it into the state and notify their insurance company. Any forms you or your employer will need can be found here.

Ask your employer about seeing a doctor and find out whether you can choose your own doctor or whether you have to use one they specify. In many states, the employer gets to choose the first doctor you see.

Your Workers Comp. Claim Can Be Denied

Many workplace injuries have circumstances that may lead to them getting denied by the insurance carrier or your employer. That is when you may need the help of a lawyer and/or the state. You will have to have a hearing and that will be mediated by Indiana State WCB. You can find a little more information on their website.
